GSL: SC2 Preview

Written by Super User.

It's a funny old game is Starcraft, just when I think I'm beginning to understand it I see something that leaves me completely baffled.

The game is as complex as they come and there are so many different strategies, builds, plans of attack and methods of playing that it would have the average genius struggling to keep up. As I waltz through the Alienware arena I see guys bashing their keyboard with more vigour than an office secretary whilst bases spring up and units appear from thin air, ready to strike at any moment. It's nothing like the childs play that is FPS, a game which requires mere pointing and shooting and most players leave their brains at the loading screen.

The funny thing is I struggle at the best of times to predict the outcome of CS and CS:S matches, game which I can at least claim to have some knowledge of, what chance do I have of predicting the outcome of a game that I barely even understand? Ah well, it's a dirty job but someone has got to do it. Just go easy when it's inevitably completely wrong.

SelecT (T)

While I may claim ignorance on the SC2 front I still know exactly who this guy is, as do most people who have followed the game or the numerous other titles he has played in (DOW and WC3). He was the 2 time WCG champion in Dawn of War and upon making the switch to SC2 became an instant fan favourite. Regarded as one of the best Terran players on the planet and with renowned micro-ing skills he is an incredibly tough player to beat and has, unlike others who play the race, enjoyed some success in the past against Protos players - of which there are many here this weekend.

His most recent tournament saw him make his way all the way to the semi finals at the MLG Dallas event before losing out 2-0 to Canadian KiWiKaKi. This will be a tough event for the Terran master but given his recent performances and the fact he knows most of his opposition inside out I feel he may just edge it this weekend.

Gamers Assembly 2011: Preview

blog iconsWhile some of the national teams will be in Copenhagen to attend what is probably the most competitive event of the year so far, the French rendez-vous of the week-end is Gamers Assembly which is therm of the masters points the biggest event of the country's LAN circuit. Here is a preview of the forces in attendance.

This weekend is a charged one for CS:S with events all across Europe including France as excluding VeryGames & 3DMAX, the best teams of the country will be gathered at the biggest event of the masters circuit, the Gamers Assembly 2011.

The two French rosters currently under the spotlight beeing out in Denmark for the week-end this is the chance to shine for the others teams. Gamers Assembly is the biggest event of the national calendar and also the last major date of the masters circuit, so in therm of masters points the event is largely doted and the teams qualified for the masters finals should be determined after this event. Once again this year the tournament will take place in Poitiers, at the Palais des congrès of the Futuroscope park.

The Palais des congrès of the Futuroscope will gather the French scene once again

This year it is likely that three main teams will fight for the title and this should help us to rate the current others French best teams, of course when I say others it refers to who is behind the VeryGames domination who has been taking home all the French gold trophees for a year or so. Also for once the final will not include RpK and his colleagues, and we will surely have a more spicy ending than the usual one!

The CS:S tournament will start on Saturday afternoon with group games and the brackets will be played on Sunday, the grand final of the event beeing sheduled at 13:00 CET on Monday. Cadred will provide you a full coverage of the event so stay tuned, now it is time for a short presentation of the attendance.

Spurious debate about which event was the more competitive – this or 30P – aside, it is safe to say that this is certainly one of the biggest and most hotly anticipated Source events of the 2011 calendar. Of course, it just so happens to coincide with a whole host of events across Europe with the I-series taking place at Newbury in the United Kingdom, Gamers Assembly in Poitiers, France and the Playzone LAN in Czechoslovakia.

This sees the Cadred staff and contributors cast to the four winds and blown across Europe in a flurry of coverage that will be one of our most ambitious to date. While Mick and Chriseh will be separating the UK wheat from the chaff at i42, myself and photographer extraordinaire Enrique will be out at Copenhagen Games 2011.

My hopes are high for this one for a variety of reasons. First, whatever people might think about CS:S it seems that Denmark has become something of a spiritual home for the game that is shunned by so many. Their scene seems to be one of the strongest in terms of depth of talent, with many undiscovered younger players being filed away in the “probably cheating” category, as well as established players who are amongst the best in Europe. Their teams are rarely stable though… Who can blame them? There’s drinking to be done, the Viking descendents hardly concerned with the day to day realities of trying to balance personalities and commit to practice when there’s parties to pillage.
